Computing Technology In Industry

We can’t get away from them - computers are everywhere, from the washing machine to the car it seems everything is now run by a computer and with the exponential rate they are advancing there is probably more computing power in the average mobile phone than NASA used to put a man on the moon.

And that has always been a problem for industry, as unlike other areas that computers have to function in, such as the home or office, computers in industry have to be manufactured to a robust standard and have to deal with all sorts of hostile environments from dust filled warehouses and baking hot furnaces to soaking wet production lines and deep freeze lockers.

Most industry computers are specially made, designed specifically for whatever environment they are to be used in, whether by being intrinsically sealed for dusty or hazardous atmospheres or being air-conditioned or heated to control extreme temperatures.

Whilst these industrial computers can function perfectly well they are highly expensive and replacing them can cost, not just in replacing the PC but also in downtime during the re-installation.

And that is why industry has always struggled to keep up with the ever increasing advances in technology - in fact many industrial computers have been in use for a decade and contain very old operating systems and couldn’t cope with modern ones.

Whilst this may make many industrial PCs quite stable, running ten-year-old technology does mean many manufacturing processes are not running as efficiently or using the latest software developments as they should be.

Of course, the time eventually comes when a complete upgrade can no longer be put off and the industrial machines are ripped out and replaced costing a fortune in replacement units and production downtime.

This has always been a catch-22 for industry, weighing up the cost of upgrading compared with the possible improvements to production an upgrade will bring but there is an alternative.

For several years industrial computer enclosures have been designed and manufactured that can house a conventional PC yet still provide the robustness of that of a conventional industrial machine.

These enclosures are made from all types of material including food-grade stainless steel and can be used in all hazardous and hostile environments from dust and explosive atmospheres to wet rooms, furnaces and freezers.

As well as being far less expensive than buying a bespoke industrial computer these enclosures have allowed industry to use conventional low cost PCs in environments that they could normally not function in. Furthermore it is now possible to replace and upgrade machines in a matter of minutes whilst still using the same enclosure and reducing production downtime.

HONG KONG, China (CNN) — “People have this inherited legacy from the 1940’s and ’50’s that you’ve ‘made it’ when your film is shown on a big screen,” observes Andrew Apostola, who co-founded the Portable Film Festival (PFF) online in 2006. Joseph Lam’s “Infection” won five awards at the Hong Kong Mobile Film Festival, including Grand Prize. Indeed, it was cinema that historically seduced audiences, filmmakers and visionaries, earning its present reputation as the legendary “first screen.” In the 1960’s, television had found its place in our homes as the “second screen,” while by the 1980’s personal computers came to occupy our workspace as the “third screen.” Today, mobile phones and iPods are referred to as the “fourth screen.”

After that, we generally stop counting. The fifth screen may be the GPS device on your dashboard, but it might just as well be the screen on the back of the seat in front of you on plane, trains and automobiles. As Lawrence Cheung of the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) says: “In the car, you have screens that are fitted left, right and center. You have a screen that drops down, you have a screen that pops up from your CD player. You have the split screen [which shows different images when viewed from different angles], and another screen that fits onto your rearview mirror. You have screens everywhere.”And where there are screens, there will be content.

HKMFF: “Small screen, big story”

HKPC launched the first Hong Kong Mobile Film Festival (HKMFF) in October 2007 in order to raise awareness among both the public and the industry of the potential mobile media market, as well as to encourage people to develop mobile-specific content. DMB (digital media broadcast) phones may already be common gadgets in South Korea and Japan, but Hong Kong has the second-largest mobile-phone penetration rate in the world (after Luxembourg), closely followed by Macau and Taiwan.Meanwhile mainland China has the highest number of mobile subscribers worldwide at almost 400 million, with a monthly increase of 5-6 million.

As for Hong Kong’s budding mobile content industry, Cheung sees two possible directions for development. The first is based on existing mobile handsets, where the broadcaster would be the mobile-phone operator. In this case, users would be charged according to the pay-per-view model, either by clip or by time. Either way, Cheung says, it’s not good for market development, as itemized charges discourage use. The second direction would make use of a separate broadcasting device calibrated to a protocol standard, with a much higher resolution screen than standard mobile phones. In this case, the business model would likely be pay-per-channel, with unlimited viewing.

A successful takeoff, Cheung confirms, involves both good content and a good device to view it on. This year’s 1st HKMFF seems to be a step in the right direction, judging by both the quality of the finalists and the enthusiasm of all involved. The festival’s Mobile Film Production Workshop attracted some 300 individuals, including a speaker from Singapore, while the contest itself drew entries from local filmmakers ranging from advertising professionals to primary school students. Platinum sponsors were industry giants Nokia, 3 and Sanyo. HKMFF’s two big winners were a young media professional specialized in animation and a group of pre-adolescent girls making their first film (about “Graduation” from primary school). As much as the two shorts and their respective authors differed, they all had one thought in common: They wanted their films to be seen by a lot of people.

The girls from the Holy Family Canossian School in Kowloon City were unanimous in their determination to make a first film to commemorate their fleeting primary school days together, no matter the format. “We used a big camera to shoot, and then a small screen to view,” they attested, “but we can also try other sizes.” Twenty-four-year-old Joseph Lam, a professional animator and designer, says Web sites are his “favorite medium” of distribution, where “the whole world” can see his work. “The screen may be small,” he says, “but people can get what I want to say.” The message of his multiple-award-winning animation “Infection”: Stop criticizing!

PFF: “A Festival in Your Hands”

Part of HKMFF’s logistical inspiration came from the annual Portable Film Festival based in Sydney, which was imagined long before YouTube and MySpace took over the Web.

After seeing how iPods were first taking off in the U.S., Apostola thought it would be great to see more on portable media, and so launched PFF in Australia to make more people aware of fourth-screen distribution. “These films are not necessarily made-for-mobile, or shot with one,” insists Apostola. His mission is to promote online viewing of creative content on mobile media, and the curated PFF is a platform for showcasing talent, now currently open to 2008 submissions. But he agrees that the market for online and mobile distribution is evolving very slowly, even in the tech-trendy Asia-Pacific region. Speaking for Hong Kong, HKMFF’s Cheung says, “The main thing is to develop a business model. If an independent filmmaker comes up with a series of 5-minute shorts, it could be very attractive. But how does he publish? Through a mobile-phone channel? Or through an operator’s distribution network? The industry infrastructure has yet to be established. I don’t know how it will develop, but where there’s money, people will do something… It will be a very exciting time in the next five years.”

Sundance: “Short films, tall ideas”

In 2007, Sundance focused on innovative mobile movies by challenging six independent filmmakers to make a short especially for the mobile phone screen. The resulting Global Short Film Project showcases five very different films, for the most part experimental, which premiered at last year’s 3GSM Congress in Barcelona. One of the artists, Maria Maggenti, remarked: “What’s interesting about this format is there’s still a very strong impulse that people have to share, the same way that you go to the cinema.” Furthermore, she used the Kuleshov Effect to suggest emotional expressions on her dog’s face in the foreground during a day out in LA, making her her clip all the more viral.

Another artist, Cory McAbee, reappropriated three elements people were already used to seeing on a small format — photo-montage, computer loops and a surveillance camera setting — to make a repetitive-obsessive music video set in a convenience store. Meanwhile Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton, the couple behind “Little Miss Sunshine” shot a slow-motion short on slapstick stunts from the silent era. McAbee is especially thrilled that “people who promote independent work” are getting involved in this budding new distribution media from the beginning, as he commented, “There will come a time when it will be difficult to be seen amongst all that stuff when it all starts filling in.”

In January 2008, Webby Awards founder and filmmaker Tiffany Shlain sat down during the Sundance festival with David Strauss, co-founder and CEO of film distributor Without a Box, to chat about synergy between making and distributing films. Filmmakers should put “just as much creativity and energy and resources into making a film as to getting it out creatively into world,” says Shlain. “The biggest challenge is to make filmmakers understand that they’re also distributors.”

It’s “about turning filmmakers into entrepreneurs, and giving them tools to be able to do that,” says Strauss. “It’s very possible that your favorite film, you don’t even know about it yet. But through collaborative filtering, you’re going to find it.”We may not be there yet, but a successful collaboration between creative content authors and profitable, popular distribution is never too far off.

“Everyone uses the phrase like a badge of honor that you’re an ‘independent filmmaker,’” says Shlain, “but I think people need to start saying that you’re an ‘interdependent filmmaker.’ There are so many support networks and technologies that can support what you’re doing.”

(CNN) — Do you think you will be using a personal computer for the rest of your life It might be too late to remove computers from our lives, but there’s no need to be chained to a desk or even own a PC. Replying “yes” to that might be vaguely depressing. How many cumulative hours will you spend hunched over a monitor? But then once personal computing and online communications have been installed into your life, they’re hard to uninstall.

So let’s refine the question: Will you own a personal computer for the rest of your life? Maybe it’s too late to stop needing computers, but is it necessary to actually own one now that they’re so ubiquitous?

The same question is being asked about automobiles. Why own a car if you only need one occasionally? Car-sharing programs like Flexcar have spread rapidly in gridlocked cities from London and Los Angeles to Tokyo. With these programs you get access to fleets of cars located around the city. Many urbanites have happily ditched their own wheels in favor of such programs.

Computer-sharing is even easier. It requires no membership program. You simply use computers wherever you find them, either by keeping all your data online or on a USB flash drive that holds all your files, applications and settings. Both approaches are becoming increasingly viable, and combined they’re even more effective. But why bother?

Green shoots to sharing apps

Environmental concerns might come to mind. Witness the slum residents in India who face toxic exposure while recycling computer parts. Recent gatherings like the Greener Gadgets Conference in New York highlight the concerns. Few consumers, though, are likely to sacrifice their gadgets just for the sake of being green. “They may be buying expensive solar panels and hybrid cars, but I don’t see them giving up their laptops and iMacs any time soon,” says Michal Ann Strahilevitz, a marketing professor at Golden Gate University in San Francisco who studies consumer interest in green issues. There are other reasons to not own a computer. If you’re a road warrior lugging around a laptop all the time, you’ve surely dreamed of getting that monkey off your shoulder. Indeed the people who particularly love the idea of portable applications on a USB flash drive are not environmentalists, but road warriors plotting an escape from laptop bondage.

There’s a whole ecosystem now of portable applications and online forums catering to these folks. And it’s not just USB flash drives that can be used: iPods and cheap portable hard drives work just as well as long as they can plug into a USB port. If you frequently have access to available computers, this approach can work — and boost your green credentials. “The idea of a system-and-apps-on-a-USB key is a green plus,” notes Jeff Yang, a consultant with trend research firm Iconoculture. And, he adds, “that’s where the iPod/iPhone is going. It’ll end up being a complete lifestyle management device, not just a media platform.”

The advantages to portable applications are real. All the settings and data associated with the applications stay on the drive, leaving no trace of your presence on a host computer. Many of these drives have finger-print identification built in, which improves security. And everything associated with an application stays in a single folder, meaning you can back up your email — and all its associated files and settings — simply by copying that one folder to another drive. (For this reason some people are using portable apps on their desktop computers.)

The downside is that you always need other people’s computers (and their USB ports) to be accessible wherever you are. Computers in Internet cafes, airports and libraries are options, but sometimes they’re locked away inside a cabinet to prevent tampering, leaving you with only the keyboard and monitor.

Keeping your life online

In those cases, having all your stuff online might be useful. A startup service called Jooce gives you a private online desktop where you can keep all your files and folders. It was created partly for the developing world, where it’s not uncommon for an entire village to share a single cell phone. With Jooce, hundreds of people can have their own profiles on a single computer. Any computer becomes your computer. The idea also works for people in the developed world who hop from one Internet cafe to another. Bigger players offer Web-based software and folder space as well. See the Google Apps suite, for instance. The most obvious drawback with such services is that you can’t always get online. (Security and limited capabilities are also concerns.)

And, unlike owning a flash drive in lieu of a personal computer, using such services are not necessarily any greener. “They shift the power drain from the consumer end back to enormous server farms that have become incredible energy-sucks,” notes Yang. “And you still need a computer to access them.” Another way to avoid PC ownership is to recognize that you might already have two: your PDA is the other one. Many of today’s PDAs trounce the desktop computers of old in both speed and memory, and pocket versions of common software is available for them. Attach a foldable keyboard and you’ve got a nice little computer — with a screen that’s way too small.

But this too is being worked on. Micro-projectors that can project your screen onto any flat wall might soon be readily available. In the meantime products like the Redfly Mobile Companion take another approach. The Redfly has the shape of a laptop computer, but the processor and the applications are all on your PDA, which connects via a USB cable. The device is basically an empty shell that adds a laptop-like screen and keyboard — and even USB slots — to your PDA.

Of course PC sales are in no imminent danger. Most people, if given the choice, would quite sensibly opt for their own PC. Research firm IDC projects strong PC sales growth worldwide for the next few years. Still, it’s nice to know that a future is taking shape where owning a computer, like owning a car, is not completely necessary — even if using one is.

Are you in to web designing and the primary component of your design is made up of flash animation? if so, then why don’t you enhance a little more your graphics and animation with the help of some flash components. I know a website which offers this kind of components, this website is flashloaded.com which offers different flash products. When you are going to visit their website you will see from there their new flash creation like this 3D Wall, that displays images on an engaging interactive 3D wall, and they used Papervision3D engine to create it. Another is the photoSplash, that displays a collection of images in a random layout and angle with a choice of easing styles.

When you are going to incorporate your style in designing plus the flash components that they have. Surely your creation will boooooooommmmm… so, if interested and what to see more from them then log on to http://www.flashloaded.com.

I want to introduced to you my loyal readers [if there is any :)] my new website that I was created this morning. I was very excited to launch this because maybe I can use this as money making blog so that it can help me with my financial shortage. This evening I am going to search for some blog for money website where I am going to register my newly built blogsite. Hope this will work as well and be successful. Thanks to the modern technology today there is something like this that can help us and also with the latest gadgets. If you are going to read some pinoy reviews, technology burner or pinoy technology blogsanime videos like what I have then you understand what I am talking about. Goodluck to me. Ahm… I am going to watch some now that is why I am rushing with this push and I don’t know if my grammars are correct. Please widen your taught. That what the best life will be…
